St Patricks Cathedral

Dublin
If you fancy seeing some of Irelands churches and cathedrals, then this is the perfect place for you. St. Patrick’s Cathedral is Ireland’s largest church and attracts over 300,000 tourists each year.

Before the cathedral was built a well was in its site. Legend has it that when St Patrick came to Dublin he was baptised here and because of this a small wooden chapel was built to commemorate St. Patrick. In 1192 Archbishop John Comyn rebuilt the cathedral in stone.

A stone marks the site where the well was situated and is sealed in the west end of the cathedral.

Externally the cathedral is 91m long and contains heavy stout walls. You’ll find many monuments and artefacts in memory of important people and families, such as Jonathan Swift who was Dean of the Cathedral for several years. The funerals of Dr. Douglas Hyde and Erskine Hamilton Childers, both former presidents of Ireland took place in the Cathedral.

Interesting Fact: It is the only Cathedral in Ireland and Britain that has services held twice a day.
