Dublin’s Spire is located on Dublin’s main thoroughfare O Connell Street. This one hundred and twenty metres tall structure is the tallest structure in County Dublin. The official name of the Spire is the Monument Of Light and it was was designed by Ian Ritchie Architects as part of the Dublin Millennium project.
The Spire of Dublin was built from eight empty tubes of stainless steel. It’s a massive needle shaped structure, which was completed in January 2003. An amazing feature of the spire is that its display looks different during different times of the day.
In the daytime, it looks like a computer simulation, at night it remind you of black satin and in the early morning it has a blue colour.
The main purpose of the Spire was to replace the Nelson Pillar, which was destroyed by the IRA in the middle of the night. The head of Nelson however is preserved in the Dublin Civic Museum.
