GPO

Dublin
The General Post Office (GPO) is located on Dublins main thoroughfare, O’Connell Street, right behind the Spire. It is the head office for the Irish postal service An Post.

Built in 1818, it was designed by Francis Johnston and is the last Georgian building to be found in Dublin. The GPO is probably most famous for its history with the 1916 Rising. It holds a special place in the Irish hearts as it was from here that Padraig Pearse read the proclamation for independence. During the war it was greatly damaged by the British forces and not renovated for years later.

In fact you can still see the bullet holes that pierced the columns outside the GPO and a sole statue inside the building commemorates the Easter Rising. The National Flag of Ireland and green flag with ‘Irish Republic’ written on it in orange can be seen everyday at the GPO
